The part of the scale beyond the stop
A shortened instrument range, an absent witness and a matching pair of incomplete records make different kinds of limits visible.
Six hundred
The first stock sheet offers a millimetre of nominal travel. A later line on the same sheet reduces usable motion to six hundred micrometres. The remaining four hundred are not a small uncertainty attached to a measurement. The instrument cannot reach them in the offered configuration. The candidate review therefore ends before the strip enters the frame.
The second head reaches farther, but its calibration stops at the head itself. The bracket still has to hold it. Between an attractive specification and a useful apparatus are ordinary objects with their own behavior: a mount, a cable, a reference that must remain still. The bench has acquired two specific candidates and a narrower question, though it has not acquired an instrument.
One, and then no two
The witness journal study begins with two records surrounding a receiver sample. After the second disappears, the sequence that remains is orderly. It begins at one and has no internal gap. That orderly beginning cannot say what happened after it. Lumen keeps the sample and waits for the missing side of its timing support.
In the checkpoint comparison, the second copy earns its place by preserving a commit absent from the first. When both lose the same commit, agreement returns. The favorable output and the lost history remain beside one another in the retained software case. A later design will need a reason why one copy survives where the other does not.
The next object
The November 30 review leaves concrete work: an assembled mounting record, a defensible receiver session, and a checkpoint whose failure does not follow the acquisition journal. None can be supplied by improving the wording of the preceding result.
The programs have large destinations. This week their progress is visible in what can be requested next, with enough specificity that an answer may disappoint them. A workshop can decline a loan. A missing record can remain missing. Research has to leave room for those answers.
