The order of leaving

· Ruth Calder

A withdrawn offer, an unused challenge and an unsent acknowledgement locate three different thresholds.

An instrument that stays where it is

A date on a stock sheet can begin to resemble an object on a bench. December 8 passes without that object changing rooms. KIS-61 is still at the workshop, assigned to another customer. The mounting review closes the offer with its conditions intact. The collective now has a specific answer and must search again.

The certificate names a bracket. That ordinary name matters because the head cannot measure from nowhere: it is held by a piece of metal, and that piece belongs to an assembly. The promise of a number travels less easily than the number printed on the sheet.

Before a record may travel

The session proposal gives a receiver sample a challenge issued outside its recovered journal. A used challenge stops the replay. But if the issuing ledger travels backward with the receiver, the checker sees its favorable control again. The missing distinction lies outside the recovered record, where the next design will have to preserve it.

In the write-boundary study, an acknowledgement is the last event rather than the first sign that work is complete. R2 is drawn once. The local record is flushed, then the witness, then the reply may leave. Between the first and second durable copies there is still an interval that a power loss can expose.

What the next apparatus must do

These thresholds are different. A workshop schedule closes an offer. A challenge needs a custodian beyond a replayed receiver. A stored symbol needs a write that has actually completed. No common cause is established by placing them on the same review table.

The week ends with an equipment search to reopen and two proposals precise enough to cut at particular steps. Large destinations remain visible beyond them: a strip whose extension can be trusted, a sample whose time survives interruption, an acquisition whose recovery does not quietly choose again.
